Introduction to Learning Objects - Repeated

Presenter Name & Short Bio:

Dr Charles Duncan is the CEO and co-founder of Intrallect, and has been involved in e-learning for more than 20 years. Charles was originator and technical director of the EuroMET project, a 2.8M Euro project involving 22 partners, completed on time and on budget which won a European Academic Software Award in 1998. He spent 25 years as an academic at the University of Edinburgh where he gained wide experience of management of large projects, and as Head of Department. Before founding Intrallect Charles produced both academic educational e-learning and commercial training for a range of architectures, from BBC Micros to the Web and CD-ROM. He produced educational software under contract for Longmans Microsoftware, EuroControl (European Air Traffic Control organisation), WMO (World Meteorological Organisation), RSSE (Remote Sensing Society Enterprises). Since co-founding Intrallect Charles has led the company to produce one of the worlds leading learning object repositories, intraLibrary, used in Universities, schools and the corporate sector. He has also carried out consultancy work for a range of bodies including LTScotland, CETIS, JISC, HEFCE and Becta. He has a BSc in Physics and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh.

• A knowledge of what makes learning objects reusable or not
• An appreciation of how to share learning objects and the benefits of sharing

Intended Audience:
This workshop is for people with no previous experience of learning objects, authoring tools or sharing tools such as repositories. It is suitable for those who are teachers using digital material and those who support such teachers.

Description of Presentation Format:

The workshop will be a series of short presentations, followed by practical exercises with participants using their own computers and discussions.

Workshop Description and Aims:

A workshop for complete beginners. This workshop covers all the basics of:
• What is a learning object?
• What makes a learning object reusable?
• What skills are needed for using learning objects?
• Can you use another person’s learning objects?
• How does a learning object change through its lifecycle?
• Do I need to know a lot of stuff about “interoperability”?
• How is sharing possible?
• Does this mean I need to change the way I work?
